An honest look at our ‘Rainbow Nation’. Many South African’s are still sleeping, and it is time to wake up.

High Fantasy could be that wake up call for you. Created by the talented Jenna Bass, this film addresses many relevant and serious issues currently going on in SA. The issues of race and gender inequality is are very much a part of SA’s recent history and many people are still ignorant as to the reality of it. This film seeks to question many of the lies that is fed to us and stimulate important conversation.

Recorded on iPhone 7’s by the actors themselves, this film is unique in many ways. Not only in the way it was filmed, but also due to the fact that the actors were able to create their own characters, with the help/guidance of Jenna.

Cast: Nala Khumalo, Qondiswa James, Liza Scholtz and Franseca Varee Michel.

A film that South African’s can be proud of…below is the trailer.

Beauty of the Week

Natural beauty Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes Umenyiora AKA Leila Lopes is a former Miss Universe (2011). Along with being famous for looking stunning she is an actress and TV Host.

Now, in order to be the Beauty of the Week at Renny Man, looks is not the only prerequisite. You’ve got to have more. And more she has. A degree in business management from the University of Suffolk (England) and currently she is heavily involved with the raising of awareness of HIV/AIDS and the discrimination towards people who have contracted this virus.

All round good person who is very easy on the eyes. Leile Lopes. Insert heart emoji here.

Know Your Vino

Now before you start to think that the Renny Man is pretentious af, I must just say that this piece is not about how to act like a douche when you’re at a social gathering while rocking an untailored suit. Instead it is making you aware of different types of red wine so that you can better choose the right wine for a dinner party (or any occasion that requires wine to be present). P.S. wine tasting article will come out next month. Another P.S. please don’t buy box wine…just don’t.

There are a number of red wines but we will just be mentioning the main 4: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz/Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

Cabernet Sauvignon: the strongest of the red wines, the wine with the greatest aging potential. Most of us aren’t about that ageing life to be honest, and personally I would not recommend purchasing this wine if you’re buying it to drink soon. Because of its strength it can almost hurt the palate of the avid wine drinker.

Merlot: not as assertive as Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s softer, with elegant fruity flavours. Merlot’s are usually ready to drinker much earlier than your Cabernet Sauvignon’s. Renny Man suggests this wine to start off drinking as it is smoother and will not attack your throat like a savage beast.

*Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are best to pair with like beef and lamb (your meat dishes).

Shiraz: big, bold and spicy and a few pretentious unnecessary words about how fruity it is. So, Syrah usually from the Rhone region of France and Shiraz is at home in Australia (most of it). Basically the same wine, it is just grown in different areas but grown in the same way.

*A versatile wine that goes well with many different types of food, but is at its peak when consumed with grilled meats.

Pinot Noir: Saving the “best” for last. Pinot Noir is the hardest grape to grow and many wine connoisseurs rate this as their favourite/best. The softest of the red wines and could be described as a stronger rose. If the dinner party in question has poultry, salmon, or a vegetable dish…we would recommend a bottle of Pinot Noir (even though it is a bit harder to come by).

Get your tailored suit and drink the right wine.

South African Breweries: Beers For Africa

Brilliant initiative from South African Breweries and Stop Hunger Now SA is trying to alleviate much of the hunger in Africa. SAB has always been passionate about the African people and is proving it with this collaboration. The aim is to grow SAB and for them to help communities efficiently enough.

#BeersForAfrica have have brought out an 8 pack which will include beers from:

  • South Africa – Castle Lager
  • Mozambique – Manica, 2M and Laurentina
  • Botswana – St Louis
  • Tanzania – Kilimanjaro
  • Zimbabwe – Zambezi
  • Lesotho – Maluti

This 8 pack is set to provide meals, create employment and support agriculture and generally bring positive change to Africa.

Drinking beer while helping the less fortunate. Great initiative.

Le Coq Sportif

Le Coq Sportif, translated into “The Athletic Rooster”, is a French company who’s products range from sports footwear to accessories to sports wear. They are on Renny’s radar, not because of their revolutionary technology in sportswear like Adidas or Nike, but instead because of the crossover between casual wear and sports wear. They’ve been doing it for years now. You can watch a Richard Gasquet (sponsored by Le Coq) tennis match, and I wouldn’t blame you if you thought that he was dressed for a day out in town.

Dripping with swagger from the 80’s especially in the era when they sponsored FIFA World Cup winning teams such as Italy in 1982, and Argentina in 1986. They have always been there. And one of my favourite pieces from Le Coq’s attire is even yellow believe it or not (insert Tour De France joke here).

Stay “coolen”.

Conscious Rap

With the release of Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar’s fourth studio album, DAMN…Renny Man questions the rap game. The questions being asked are directed more to the complexities/problems of the world and how Kendrick is addressing them (with the black lives movement in the US). Other rappers such as J. Cole and Wale (and the king of it, Kanye) will also bring up the issues which leads us to ask; do (or do we expect) all the rappers to address these issues.

Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky was questioned (judged) by the Breakfast Club for saying “They’re not forcing me to do shit. I’m just gonna stay black and die. Why, because I’m black? So every time something happens because I’m black I gotta stand up? What the fuck am I, Al Sharpton now? I’m A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist. I wanna talk about my motherfuckin’ lean, my best friend dying, the girls that come in and out of my life, the jiggy fashion that I wear, my new inspirations in drugs! I don’t wanna talk about no f–king Ferguson and shit because I don’t live over there! I live in fucking Soho and Beverly Hills. I can’t relate. I’m in the studio; I’m in these fashion studios; I’m in these bitches’ drawers. I’m not doing anything outside of that. That’s my life.”

But is he wrong though. There have been many differing opinions on this topic. And personally, I don’t think he is wrong. I would understand if there was nobody at all addressing the issue and Rocky was our only hope. Then yes, we going to need you rock up Rocky. But that is not the case. We listen to different music when we feeling a different way. If everybody was a conscious rapper we wouldn’t have variety. We wouldn’t have as many feel good songs. Sometimes we use music to get away from our problems and troubles. Sometimes I want to floss and stunt. Why would I want to listen to more problems?

Thank you Kendrick. You are definitely a light in the industry, in this world. Everyone is not Kendrick though, and not everyone wants to listen to conscious rap. Let’s leave the artists to rap about what they want to rap about. They’re artists. Don’t ruin it.

Don’t view me as no conscious cat, this ain’t no conscious rap
F**k the conscious crap, my mac’ll push your conscience back
