Undefeated in his professional career and a Commonwealth Games medallist. Thulani ‘Tulz Evolution’ Mbenge takes on Mexico’s Diego Cruz for the WBC International Welterweight Title on the 3rd of March at Emperors Palace. With a record of 12-0, Renny Man chats to the South African Welterweight Champion about the build up to his crucial World Championship fight and more.
Firstly, what does it mean to have been nominated for the South African Boxing Awards Male Boxer of the Year?
Being nominated is an honour for me. It’s an achievement that shows that people really appreciate my craft and they can see the hard work through my fights.
Preparation for this bout. When did you start? How was it?
As a top athlete you don’t get much rest because it’s a rush between fights, so I don’t take a rest. I take passive rest which means that I’m always at the gym. So I started last year, and so far so good. My preparations have gone very well for this fight, and I can confirm, confidently, I’m ready.
What should we expect to see in this fight?
You can expect fireworks in this fight, explosive performance, and skill. I’m a more crafted boxer so I stick to boxing most of the time so I’m ready to take him down the stretch and drown him. Expect ‘boxing 101 sweet science’ as we say in boxing.
How confident are you going into the bout with Cruz? How long do you see this fight going?
This is a step fight for me and I take each and every fight seriously, not undermining my opponent’s ability but I’m aware what kind of a fighter he is and I’m confident enough that I will neutralize him into my game and I don’t see him going twelve rounds with me, but if we going rounds, expect ‘boxing 101 sweet science’ and art in motion.
And finally, who you listening to before you go out there?
I’m a big fan of local music and I love Tellaman Music it gives me a chill before the storm, and Nasty C. I’m a fan of their music and hustling. I’d love to give a big shout-out to my sponsors; Daniel J, World Sports Betting, Eazi Access, Sizanani Plastics, they play a big role in my career.
Mostly I would love to thank my fans that follow us every day, who support us and sporting journalism also plays a big role.
With a pure blend of humility and confidence infused into one man; we have high hopes for the once prospect turned Champ.
